First “I AM”: I am the Bread of life

Knowing more about a person helps us to better understand and build a relationship with the person. The more we get to know about Jesus the more of Him we will experience in our lives.

In the gospel of John, we find the seven (7) I AM statements of Jesus Christ that reveals more of who Christ is to us.

These I Am statements are: Jesus says, “

1. I Am the Bread of Life (John 6).

2. I Am the Light of the World (John 8).

3. I Am the Gate of the Sheepfold (John 10).

4. I Am the Good Shepherd (John 10).

5. I Am the Resurrection and the Life (John 11).

6. I Am the Way, Truth, and Life (John 14).

7. I Am the True Vine (John 15)”

All these I AM statements gives us a more deeper understanding of who God is and how He relates with us.

Let’s explore the first “I am” statement, Jesus said “I Am the Bread of Life”

In the Jewish culture, bread is one of the major staple foods that is eaten. Bread has served as a major part of people’s diet across different cultures and many years. Hence it was easy for Jesus to depict himself as bread due it to commonality as food eaten by people across the world. Bread is also used in most cases as a metaphor to represent food/ provision in general. For example the word “breadwinner” means a person who provides to sustain a family.

Here are two main things about bread and how we can see Jesus relating himself to be the bread of life:

Bread provides sustenance to the body

Bread is served as food to nourish and provide energy for the body to function. Bread sustains the body from perishing hence it is essential for life to exist. Just as bread represents food that sustains the body, Jesus reveals himself to us as the sustainer of every human life. Apart from Jesus Christ, we will perish and be doomed for eternal damnation.

Bread satisfies the body

Bread is delicious! There are uncountable types of bread in the world. Each type prepared uniquely with its ingredients to bring out the yummy taste of the bread. Personally, I enjoy eating bread, first it is filling and brings satisfaction to the body. Many people eat not only to satisfy hunger but to also enjoy the delicious taste of it. Jesus more than bread brings an eternal satisfaction and fulfillment into our lives. In the presence of Christ there is fullness of joy and at his right hand, there are pleasures ever more (Psalm 16:11).

The hunger within us cannot be quenched by anything the world could offer. The world offers bread that attempts to satisfy the yearnings of our soul but leaves us even more empty. Jesus Christ is the bread of life who alone can sustain and satisfy us. As Jesus Christ has revealed himself to us as the bread of life, let’s seek Him with all our heart so that He may fill us with His life and grant us eternal satisfaction.

Dear one be blessed as you seek Jesus as the bread of life and always remember that Jesus Christ dearly loves you for He died on the cross for you.
