Growing up in children’s ministry, we were taught a song in Akan Twi that many of us know all too well. Translated into English, it goes something like this:
“God is here and God is at home, God is here and God is everywhere. When you sin, He will see, He will hear, He will know—when you sin, He will not be pleased with you.”
The original intent behind teaching us this song was simple: to instill a sharp consciousness of God’s presence so we would make right choices and maintain good behavior.
As a grown-up looking back, my reflection on this song has completely transformed. I am no longer intimidated by the watchful eye of God. Instead, I find deep comfort and reassurance in knowing that my Heavenly Father is always with us, keeping us, watching over us, and guiding us. More than making me sin-conscious, that childhood melody ultimately made me grace-conscious. God is always here.
The Ultimate Destination
We live in a vast world filled with immense possibilities, beautiful landscapes, and endless places to explore. Naturally, the adventurous ones among us move from nation to nation, state to state, trying to experience as much of this earth as possible before departing this side of eternity.
Yet, in the midst of exploring this grand world, we are called to remain in one primary place and dwell there always: God’s presence.
No matter how majestic a geographic location might be, God’s presence is infinitely grander. It stretches far beyond the boundaries of this world. This means that wherever our physical bodies travel, we can still safely abide and remain in Him.
God’s presence isn’t locked to a specific coordinate on a map. However, it can feel hidden from us when we don’t actively seek to experience it. To live in His presence is to live with a constant, beautiful awareness of God in our hearts and minds at all times.
As believers, the life we have obtained by grace through faith in Jesus Christ can only truly thrive when lived in communion with Him. Eternal life isn’t just a future promise; it starts the moment we receive Christ into our lives.
Scripture gives us a beautiful contrast in how we perceive this reality.
Jacob’s Awakening
On his way to his Uncle Laban, right after deceiving his brother Esau for the birthright blessing, Jacob stopped to rest for the night. In a dream, he encountered God. When Jacob woke up, he exclaimed with surprise: “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it.” (Genesis 28:16).
“As he slept, he dreamed of a stairway that reached from the earth up to heaven. And he saw the angels of God going up and down the stairway. At the top of the stairway stood the Lord, and he said, “I am the Lord, the God of your grandfather Abraham, and the God of your father, Isaac. The ground you are lying on belongs to you. I am giving it to you and your descendants. Your descendants will be as numerous as the dust of the earth! They will spread out in all directions—to the west and the east, to the north and the south. And all the families of the earth will be blessed through you and your descendants. What’s more, I am with you, and I will protect you wherever you go. One day I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have finished giving you everything I have promised you.” Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I wasn’t even aware of it!””
Genesis 28:12-16 NLT
David’s Certainty
Unlike Jacob, King David knew very well that God was already in every place. He became so intimately acquainted with the omnipresence of God that he penned these famous words in Psalm 139:7-12 (NLT):
“I can never escape from your Spirit! I can never get away from your presence! If I go up to heaven, you are there; if I go down to the grave, you are there. If I ride the wings of the morning, if I dwell by the farthest oceans, even there your hand will guide me, and your strength will support me.
I could ask the darkness to hide me and the light around me to become night—but even in darkness I cannot hide from you. To you the night shines as bright as day. Darkness and light are the same to you.”
Activating the Awareness of God’s Presence
While God is present everywhere, we only get to experience His presence when we acknowledge Him being with us at all times.
Abiding in God’s presence means recognizing that the Holy Spirit lives inside you. Living with this consciousness enables you to instinctively lean on Him, especially in moments when you need help, when you want to express gratitude, or when you just need to just fellowship with God.
So, how do we practically incorporate this into a busy life?
The Apostle Paul gives us the secret in 1 Thessalonians 5:17: Pray without ceasing.
Start Early
Talk to Him the moment you wake up. Express your gratitude to God for the gift of a new day, and consciously commit your morning, your plans, and your steps into the Lord’s hands before your feet even hit the floor.
Keep the Conversation Going
Pray your way through the day. Whether silently in your heart or aloud when you ar alone, keep the lines of communication open. No matter what tasks fill your schedule, keep God actively involved by weaving short prayers into everything you do.
Integrate Him into the Ordinary
God is with you everywhere. He is present at school, in the office, down the grocery store aisles, and at home. Commune with Him as you navigate these everyday spaces, and yield to the Holy Spirit, who is always there to guide, comfort, and help you throughout all your endeavors.
Yes, it is vital to have those special, quiet moments where you close the door and spend deep, intimate time in prayer. But the passion for those private moments actually flows from consciously engaging with God throughout your normal day.
An Invitation to Joy
God longs to engage with you and manifest Himself to you, but it requires your response.
Choosing to step into the awareness of God’s presence changes your entire reality. It shifts your life into one filled with immense joy, peace, and love. As David beautifully wrote, “In Your presence is fullness of joy.” (Psalm 16:11).
My prayer for you today is that you will be encouraged to engage with God right where you are. As you cultivate this wonderful relationship with your Savior, you will fully enjoy the eternal life we have been given, forever walking hand-in-hand with our Heavenly Father.
May God richly bless and keep you. Always remember that Jesus Christ dearly loves you for He gave His life to save you.
