Trust, Obey and Wait

Getting impressions on my heart is one of the ways I discern God’s leading in my life. Impressions could come in the form of Scripture verses, song lyrics, quotes from sermons, advice, a word and prayer requests. This week, the precious lyrics in one of the popular Christian hymn “Trust and Obey” by John H. Sammis has been resounding in my heart. The words in the  last verse especially have just been replaying over and over in my heart:

Then in fellowship sweet
we will sit at his feet,
or we’ll walk by his side in the way;
what he says we will do,
where he sends we will go;
never fear, only trust and obey.

Simply and beautifully put by the hymnist, so sweet to sing ” Trust and Obey” but not easily done.

Fellowship with Christ

Then in fellowship sweet, we will sit at his feet, or we’ll walk by his side in the way;

In the first three lines of the last verse, speaks to our fellowship with Christ. The joy and pleasure that we experience as we bask in God’s presence. It is truly joyful to spend time adoring God and just allowing His gracious love to fill our hearts. It is this time we spend with God that empowers or strengthens us for the path He has set before us.  I believe the hymnist wanted to draw our minds to the need to fellowship with God before one could launch into obeying the will and word of God.

Obedience in Christ

what He says we will do, where He sends we will go; never fear, only trust and obey.

Obedience to God does not always mean immediate fruitfulness, it does not lead to instant happiness, great outcomes do not follow immediately but they always follow. The last three lines in the fourth verse reveal to us that absolute obedience to God is the way to live as a believer. Many times, what God may ask of you will be difficult, not humanly comprehensible but drawing from the great grace and power of abiding in Christ, we are called to TRUST, OBEY and also WAIT on God.  Beloved in Christ, this is the only assured way of living for God which lead to the expected end in Christ Jesus.

There are many that have yielded their hearts to obey God; faithfully serving God yet encounter so many troubles. At times doubts, discouragement and fear set in and it may seem like you should give up. Beloved in Christ, please let the words in this hymn speak to you: “Trust and obey, for there’s no other way  to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.” There is no other way truly. Keep on fellowshipping with God and keep on pressing on the path God has set before you. As you TRUST, OBEY and WAIT, God who is ever faithful will manifest His faithfulness to you in due season.

Now Beloved, never fear, only trust and obey God got you!

Always remember that Jesus Christ dearly loves you.

God is good

God is love

God is faithful

God’s ways are mysterious
