First Things First

In the journey of life, sometimes things may not always fall in the order that we expect, but if there is one thing that should never be misplaced, that is always putting God first in everything we do.

Deciding on a major to pursue in college was one of the challenging decisions I had to make as a teenager. I thought that my college major will ultimately determine my career for the rest of my life. I was determined to succeed and wanted to ensure that I would pursue a major that matched my abilities. And will also help me find a career that will bring fulfillment to my life. Before I gave my life to Christ, life was all about the pursuit of happiness and comfort. It was my junior year in college when I realized that I needed to make a change, and the outcome of my life will not be dependent on the major I pursued in college, but some more adventures and discoveries will shape my experience in life. More importantly, I gave my life to Christ Jesus in my junior year in college, which gave me a whole new outlook in life, which has changed my view of life.

Reflecting on my college experience, I realized that my motive for pursuing a college major was based on career prospects and success for a comfortable living. On the surface, that is absolutely okay to think of life this way, but when I became a believer, I realized why I felt so empty and drained by having such motives. The drive to be successful in life was my foundation for living, and in that kind of mindset, nothing seemed to fill the gap. When I accepted Jesus Christ into my life, He became the driving force of my living and all my decisions henceforth.

Life was no longer hinged my personal success but became focused on pursuing God’s glory in all that I do. My drive for excellence and achievement in academic work and career became meaningful because, it became Christ Jesus working in me and through me to show His glory. My life now had a solid anchor that is sure and steadfast. My challenge and struggles are no longer up to me to find resolve but to surrender them to God to guide me through them all.

This is all to say that in my life, without Christ, I had the wrong priorities for my life. Instead of living for Jesus Christ, I was pursuing life for myself, filled with vanity. Beloved in Christ, I encourage you to put first things first for grace-filled life experience with Jesus Christ. Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ should always be first in all aspects of our life. Everything about our lives and throughout our lives should always be rooted in Christ.

Here is why I have resolved that God should be first in all things and all the days of my life and I hope this blesses you.

Jesus Christ is the creator of all things both living and non- living

He is the source of our lives; hence it is Him we begin and end. One cannot do anything in life without first being connected to their source. As our creator, He knows everything about us, and nothing is hidden from Him. In this world, which can sometimes feel like a maze, He who knows all who can lead us all the way to the end. Apart from Him, we cannot do anything (John 15).

Christ is the visible image of the invisible God.
He existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation,[a]

Colossians 1:15 NLT

Jesus Christ is our ever-faithful provider

Jehovah Jireh, there is nothing He cannot do. Jesus Christ tells us to seek first the Kingdom of God, and His righteousness and all other things shall be added unto us. God knows every need of us; it is only when we make Him first that we allow Him to move in our lives to provide our every need. God withholds no good thing from His righteous (those who put Him first).

Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.

Matthew 6:33 NLT

God is Worthy of all Glory and Honor

It is indeed a privilege to have the Almighty God as our Savior. Putting God first is honoring and worshiping Him for who He is as our God.

And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ This is the first commandment.

Mark 12: 30 NKJV

Our God left His throne to offer Himself as a ransom that we will be saved. The lamb of God was slain for our sins. God put us first and for that offering of Himself, we also reckon this great sacrifice and honor Him in our lives by always putting Him first.

He then would have had to suffer often since the foundation of the world; but now, once at the end of the ages, He has appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself.

Hebrews 9:26 NKJV

The beauty in all of these is that God pours out so many blessings upon our lives when we put Him first. God fills our heart with peace, joy and love. Our endeavors are blessed and God is glorified in all of them. We worship God in Spirit and in Truth when we put Him first. Our lives become platforms on which God is exalted and magnified and many lives are drawn to the Savior. I pray and hope your heart receives this message and always make God first in your life.
