Sarah’s Laughter

There is this common Christian quote that says  “God can turn your mess into your message”. This quote really resonated with me when I came across the Bible verses (Genesis 18:12 and Genesis 21:6) in my study time.

Today’s devotion is a word of encouragement to all of us, that God is not even limited to the faith we have in Him to do something in our lives. Often people will say to others that you are not receiving a blessing, breakthrough or a miracle in your life due to your lack of faith. Does God only depend on our faith to help us? In my understanding and experience, recieved I do not think so. It is true that many received God’s manifestations in their lives due to faith but there are many and several more moments when God has intervened in a situation in your life when you had given up all hope. I want to be careful here not to encourage you not to have faith but to reveal to you the nature of the God we serve, God is compassionate and understands the struggles and challenges we go through in our life.

Now, in regards to the below passages:

sarah

Therefore Sarah laughed within herself, saying, “After I have grown old, shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also?” – Genesis 18:12

And Sarah said, “God has made me laugh, and all who hear will laugh with me.” – Genesis 21:6

This is an experience that Sarah the wife of Abraham had in her time of waiting for God for the promise of a child. As is found in the book of Genesis, God calls Abraham and his wife and tells them to go to a land He (God) will show him. In addition to this God promised to bless Abraham and multiply his descendants all over the earth. God promised that He will give Abraham and Sarah a son even though it was known that Sarah was barren. Is God not amazing, where humanity has set the limit, God breaks it.

Is God not amazing, where humanity has set the limit, God breaks it.

After 25 years, most of the blessings were manifesting, Abraham was increasing in wealth, but the promised son was not in view and he and Sarah were advancing in age. In chapter 18, God visits Abraham in the form of three men. Abraham received them warmly and shared his food with them. God reminds Abraham again on this day that a year by this time, Sarah will have the promised child. Sarah upon hearing this from nearby laughed because she found it physically impossible for her and Abraham to conceive due to old age and physical ability.

God heard Sarah’s laughter and asked why she laughed, Sarah denied that she did but God said to her that she did and He knows it. At that moment God took Sarah laughter which was her “mess” ( doubt, lack of human ability, the pain of disappointment for so many years, jealousy and etc) and in Chapter 21 used that to bring forth her testimony or “message”. Abraham gave the name Isaac to the child which means “He laughs”. Sarah laughed at the birth of the promised son and this time it was her message that God has made her laugh, her joy has been made full, God is glorified.

I am sure when Isaac was born Sarah remembered that she laughed before and now she laughs again. These two laughs portrayed different emotions and notions. Where one was a “mess”(filled with doubt, pain, and sorrow), the last laugh was filled with joy, celebration, and praise to God.

Sarah laughter of pain became a laughter of joy.

Beloved, I pray that you have been encouraged by Sarah’s story, I will say this that no matter what is going on in your life, do not turn away from God. Your faith may have dwindled down to the size of a mustard seed, God can still show up in your life. Cry unto God, laugh unto God, express how you really feel about God and God will take that “mess” and will give you a “message”. Sarah laughter of pain became a laughter of joy.

Stay blessed and always remember that Jesus Christ dearly loves you!

  1. Excellent perspective. I had been researching this and I think you are right on point. It is almost that God gets the last laugh. He causes the laugh of impossibilities to turn into the laugh of testimony.
