The human body is the vessel through which God fulfills His purposes on earth. A body that is sanctified and honorable is always fit for God’s use. In 2 Timothy 2:21, Paul instructs believers to be intentional and alert about how they use their bodies in all aspects as they serve and honor God through their day-to-day living.
In the coming series of posts, we will explore our eyes, mouth and tongue, ears, and our hands and feet and what God’s word instructs us to do with them as we yield our lives to Him as His vessels. In this post, we will focus on the role of our physical eyes. Most believers desire to have their spiritual eyes opened to see beyond the physical realm, but before we can do so, we must also focus on how we use the physical eyes that we have been given to see the physical realm.
21 If you keep yourself pure, you will be a special utensil for honorable use. Your life will be clean, and you will be ready for the Master to use you for every good work.
2 Timothy 2:21 NLT
Eyes are the lamp of the Body
The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!
Matthew 6:22-23 NKJV
In Matthew 6:22-23, Jesus referred to our eyes as our focus. He urged his listeners to focus on God instead of worldly pleasures, such as the love of money. When we focus on God, our lives are filled with light, but when we focus on worldly pleasures, we invite despair and destruction. Our emotions are greatly influenced by what we see, and we can shift from being sad to happy just by changing what we look at. To let light into our lives, we must feed our eyes with positive things that align with God’s will and word. It’s essential to be mindful of what we watch on our electronic devices and ensure that we’re consuming content that pleases God and shares His light in our lives. We should commit our eyes to serve the holy call of being a lamp lit with God’s light to bring illumination into our bodies.
The Eyes and our Desires
The things we see affect our thoughts and emotions. Eve’s desire for the forbidden fruit in Genesis 3:6 is an example of how visual stimulation can influence our actions. For instance, after watching a horror movie or an ungodly content, we may feel fear or develop ungodly desires. I believe many can relate to this experience.
But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
Matthew 5:28 NKJV
As we immerse ourselves in the word of God, we will gradually receive the divine revelation we so yearn for. To open our spiritual eyes, it is imperative that we first purify our physical eyes. This will enable us to perceive the hidden mysteries and understand the will and word of God more deeply.
Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law – Psalm 119:18
Psalm 119:18
Job said:
”“I made a covenant with my eyes not to look with lust at a young woman.“
Job 31:1 NLT
Dear one, with this message, I hope we can commit to living a life of purity like Job did. We should strive to keep our eyes focused on things that are pleasing and honorable to God. In this world, we are constantly exposed to unholy and ungodly things, whether it be on the internet, television, or in our communities. Nevertheless, we must resist the temptation to engage with such things. Instead, we should look away and avoid places where we know we will encounter such things. By guarding our eyes with diligence, we can use them to serve and honor God. Through daily prayer of surrender of our eyes to God, the help of the Holy Spirit, and our commitment to live for God, I believe we can walk in His holy calling with pure eyes.
The Bible clearly points out three key things that draw us away from our Heavenly Father which are:
(1) Lust of the flesh, (2) lust of the eyes, and (3) the pride of the life – 1John 2.16.
This reveals the wrongful indulgence of our eyes to look upon things that are ungodly, sinful, or evil can steer our heart away from our Heavenly Father and pull us into worldliness.
Our eyes as believers has been given to us to see as our Lord Jesus used His eyes to see. Continue to read on about the holy call to see in this post where I share on To See as Jesus Sees.
Pray with me
Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for giving me eyes to see, I pray and surrender my eyes to you that you will guide and guard my eyes to see only that which you need me to see. Let my eyes bring glory and honor to you. As my eyes is set on honoring you, I know it will bring great light into my being and help me to see more of You in my everyday life. Thank you for listening to my prayers in Jesus name Amen.
Dear one, always remember you are dearly loved by God for He gave His life to save you.
