People who have journeyed for weeks, or sometimes months, through a desert often share experiences of extreme thirst. They recount seeing what looks like a body of water in the distance, only to discover, upon closer approach, that it was merely an illusion. This phenomenon, known as a mirage, occurs due to light refraction in the atmosphere, creating the illusion of water that entices thirsty travelers.
This experience is similar to what we encounter in the journey of life. As humans, we possess a deep thirst within ourselves that longs to be fulfilled to make us whole. The French Mathematician, Philosopher and Scientist Blaise Pascal refers to this deep void as an “infinite abyss,” which can only be filled by God, the only infinite and unchanging one. When we reject God, we often find ourselves seeking fulfillment in the fleeting pleasures and promises of sinful experiences, which merely present an illusion of satisfaction that cannot truly fill the emptiness in our lives. We quickly come to recognize that these mirages of fulfillment are just empty promises; when we pursue them, we realize they never provide the true fulfillment we seek.
The fulfillment that our ungodly desires promise us is never attained. We end up feeling emptier as we chase after these false hopes for joy, peace, and love, which can only be found in God. Jim Carrey, a well-known American actor and comedian, once remarked, “I wish everyone could be rich and famous so that they would realize it doesn’t fulfill them.” These words come from a person who, by worldly standards, has achieved wealth and success, yet understands that the pursuit of earthly riches cannot satisfy the deep void within us only God can offer true contentment in life.
In the book of Jeremiah, God reveals through His prophet that, like the people of today, many have forsaken Him. They attempt to quench their thirst with cisterns that cannot provide water at all. Not only have the people created these cisterns using their own energy and resources, but they also discover that these cisterns are unable to fulfill their intended purpose.
“For my people have done two evil things: They have abandoned me the fountain of living water. And they have dug for themselves cracked cisterns that can hold no water at all!”
Jeremiah 2:13 NLT
Beloved in Christ, my purpose here is straightforward: to remind you that only God can truly fill and satisfy you. Your joy, peace, and love are found solely in Him. You were created by God to be sustained by Him. On your own, you will perish and bear no fruit. As it says in
John 15:5, “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.”
God is the one who equips, strengthens, and empowers you to be and do all that is required of you for His glory. The ungodly desires and longings of your flesh will never provide the fulfillment you seek; instead, they will leave you feeling empty, weary, and lost. The more you pursue these desires, the deeper you will fall into the grips of deceit and destruction.
Dear one, wake up from your slumber (Romans 13:11) and see clearly that the fulfillment that sin promises is merely an illusion; in reality, it leads to death (Romans 7:5). Jesus Christ offers Himself to us as the Bread of Life (John 6:35) and Living Waters (John 4:13-14; John 7:37-38). When we partake of the Bread of Life, we will never hunger, and when we drink the Living Waters, we will never thirst.
Let’s pray:
Heavenly Father, we praise You for sending Jesus Christ as our Savior. Thank You, Jesus, for giving Yourself as the bread of life and the living water that fills us, making us whole for eternity. We ask in Jesus’ name that Your grace and power reach all who are thirsty, weary, and lost, filling them with Your life. Bring wholeness and healing to all in need, and revive hearts to always seek and abide in You as our true vine. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
