Hearing from God

You might have heard someone, like a believer or a Christian leader, share a similar testimony in sermons or discussions about how they felt led by God—whether through impressions on their hearts, deep convictions, or even a quiet voice inside directing them at key moments in their lives.

Here’s the thing: one of the most incredible gifts we receive when we become born again—when we believe in and accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior—is that we become children of God. This wonderful relationship opens up lines of communication with God, making it feel like we are communing with a close friend. Our bond as Father and child is restored, and just like it says in John 10:27, we become like Jesus’ sheep. We hear His voice, He knows us, and we joyfully follow Him!

“My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.”
‭‭John‬ ‭10‬:‭27‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

47 Whoever belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God.” – John 8:47 NIV

Many believers often overlook the privilege of having direct access to God and rely too heavily on others to speak to them about God’s guidance for their lives. While it is true that God can use other people to communicate with us—especially when distractions prevent us from hearing Him—He desires a personal relationship with each of us. God wants to guide us along the path of righteousness and help us live the abundant life we have in Jesus Christ. Therefore, it is important for believers to expect to hear from God regarding their lives consistently.

The emphasis of this message is to highlight the believer’s experience, which includes the ability to hear from our Heavenly Father. This grace to hear from God is not reserved for a select few; it is available to every child of God. While there may be times when God speaks through others, providing a prophetic word to encourage and strengthen your faith, it is essential to remember that He will confirm this word within your spirit, assuring you that it is truly from Him (Inward Witness – Romans 8:16).

God speaks to us in various ways. The primary method is through the Word of God, which is why it is essential to always read, study, and meditate on the Scriptures. When you spend time in the Word, it will resonate in your heart, guiding you in your decisions or providing you with messages through other believers. The Spirit of God uses the Scriptures to highlight God’s directives in your life.

Moments we can experience God speaking to us may include:

God is with us at all times and in all things; He is ever present in our lives. This signifies that God is deeply invested in all we do and become. In our daily routines, He guides us to pursue righteousness and reflect Christ in our actions. Through our desire to help others in our communities—at grocery stores, on the roadside, in laundromats, in schools, and beyond—God impresses upon our hearts the call to show love and extend a helping hand to those in need. A simple smile can brighten someone’s day. In our work or education, God provides His word always to guide us on our journey through life.

The Scriptures clearly reveal that when we seek God through prayer, He will always answer us. Matthew 7:7 states, “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.” This verse emphasizes that there will always be a response from God when we approach Him. Therefore, we should live with the expectation, as children of God, to always hear from Him.

‘Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.’ – Jeremiah 33:3

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God,which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7

The Scriptures always have a way of speaking to us when we take the time to engage with them. God has provided us with His written Word to help us understand His will and ways for His glory. As we study and reflect on God’s Word, the Spirit of God illuminates specific verses that can guide us through the various seasons of life we experience.

“Let me hear what God the LORD will speak, for he will speak peace to his people, to his saints; but let them not turn back to folly.” – Psalm 85:8

My dear friend in Christ, remember that God communicates with you; therefore, keep your heart open to discern His guidance in your life.
