As humans, our ears receive information rather than giving it out. The ears absorb the sounds in our environment. However, we must intentionally listen to comprehend the sounds we are hearing. As believers in Christ, we have a holy call to tune our ears to listen to that which is holy, righteous, and God-glorifying, such as the Word of God, godly music, wise counsel, and biblical teachings of life.
God calls us to tune into these sounds (holy, righteous, edifying, and God-glorifying), but they are often drowned out by the noises that yield no godly results in our lives. When we focus our ears on ungodly things, the voice of God becomes small, and we can barely detect it(whether as an audible sound or impressions on our heart). To hear and listen to the voice of God and the things of God, we must first focus and discipline our hearing to drown out the noises around us and tune into godly sounds, we ought to have our focus set on our Lord Jesus Christ (Hebrews 12:2).
Tuning in and Tuning out
Tuning in and tuning out is a skill we are all capable of doing. However, the ultimate ability lies in our desire for the things of God. If we have no interest in God, we give our ears no attention to God’s voice or the voices and sounds God is calling us to listen and act upon.
As Romans 10:17 says, faith comes from hearing and hearing through the word of God. As we listen, our souls are ignited with revelation about who God is and we also receive divine directions to perform assignments, tasks and mandates from God. It is important to note that listening to something always leads to action, even if the action requires us to remain still. Therefore, we must pay attention to what we listen to, as it reflects in our words and actions.[Pause and Reflect: What sounds have you been listening to and how are these voices, sounds, music reflected in your daily actions?]
God’s word beseeches us to tune our hearing into listening to God’s word and absorbing it into our souls to bring transformation into our lives (lives to reflect Christ in us). Let’s tune our ears in alignment with God’s word, will, and way for our lives.
Be on Guard Against Ungodly Desires
3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; 4 and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.
2 Timothy 4:3-4 NKJV
The word of God in 2 Timothy 4:3-4 warns us that we are now living in a time when the ungodly desires of our body, such as the desire of the ears to tune into unedifying messages, will lead many away from Christ. Therefore, we must be on guard about what we tune into, as it creates a pattern of behavior in our lives that leads to the outcomes in our lives. If we become accustomed to listening to things that do not edify us and bring glory to God, our desires will always be towards those things (ungodly things and deceptions of the enemy), and we will miss out on what God is doing and telling us to do in the earth. – [What you tune into will steer your path in life – To live out God’s purpose on earth, you MUST be tuned into God]
Beloved in Christ, let’s use our ears for God’s glory. I pray that we’ll be intentional about listening to God’s voice and tuning out the distractions of life.
Let’s pray:
Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for giving us ears to hear your voice. Help us to always be open to what you’re saying. Guide us to tune out distractions and focus on listening to you. If there are things that are distracting us, please silence them and help us to hear your voice more clearly. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen
Always remember that you are dearly loved by our Lord Jesus Christ, for He gave His life to save you.
