It is amazing how much power the mouth and tongue possess, as demonstrated by the impact they can have in various situations. They can bring immense joy when used to share good news, or heartbreak and sadness when used to communicate tragic news. The mouth and tongue play a crucial role in our bodies, facilitating communication and nourishment. Communication involves producing words or sounds, while nourishment involves ingesting food and liquids to stay healthy.
As followers of Christ, who strive to embody His character in our daily lives, we need to be mindful of how we use our mouths and tongues. Our words and what we consume through our mouths can have a significant impact on both our spiritual and physical well-being, as well as the outcomes we experience in life. Therefore, I urge us to always use our mouths and tongues in a Christlike manner. Let us reflect the nature of our Lord Jesus Christ, who is love, full of grace and truth, in everything we do.
Mouth and Tongue for Speaking
”Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it and indulge it will eat its fruit and bear the consequences of their words.“
Proverbs 18:21 AMP
The mouth and the tongue are key tools we use to communicate, and communication plays a crucial role in shaping all aspects of our lives. Every action we take involves communication in some form or another. The words and sounds we produce during communication can either have a positive or negative impact on our lives, as Proverbs 18:21 reveals. When we use godly, righteous, and positive words, we give life to those around us. On the other hand, when we use negative, vulgar, demeaning, and filthy words, we bring death. These words are like seeds that yield outcomes or fruits, as mentioned in Proverbs 18:21. Those who indulge in ungodly and non-Christlike language often find themselves struggling with sin, darkness, and unrighteousness. On the other hand, those who speak in a Christlike manner with words of kindness, love, and grace, and demonstrate the character and fruit of the Holy Spirit, witness positive outcomes in their lives reflecting the things they have spoken.
The Psalmist sums it up as:
Who is the man who desires life,
Psalm 34:12-13 NKJV
And loves many days, that he may see good?
13 Keep your tongue from evil,
And your lips from speaking deceit.
Therefore, if we want to live a life filled with positivity and righteousness, we must choose our words wisely. Speaking like Christ, with kindness, love, and grace, will not only bless others, but it will also bring blessings to our own lives.
Here I highlight three scripture verses that hones on the power the words we speak with our mouth and tongue carries:
The words we speak can create or destroy
3 By faith we understand that the [a]worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible.
Hebrews 11:3 NKJV
Spoken words not only aid communication but also create existence, e.g. in the Bible, God spoke things into being. During prayer or just reflection and meditation on God’s word or at any moment for that matter, speak God’s promises , Will and Word into the atmosphere. Declare God’s word out of your mouth with faith in God and trust God to bring His word to pass.
The words we speak can edify and encourage
”Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.“
Ephesians 4:29 NKJV
Bishop James was aware of the immense power of words that come out of one’s mouth and tongue. In his letter – James 3, he advised the faithful to control their tongue as it can cause extensive damage if used carelessly. He emphasized the need to recognize the potential of the tongue, which is like a small spark that can ignite an entire forest. As believers, it’s essential to use our tongue and mouth thoughtfully and wisely to grow spiritually and become more like our Lord Jesus Christ.
Mouth and Tongue for Eating
Our tongue and mouth often crave indulgent treats, but we must remember to prioritize our health above momentary pleasure. We must nourish our bodies with healthy and nourishing food, just as our words aid in our spiritual growth.
Let us discipline ourselves to make wise choices when it comes to food and drink, for they have a profound impact on our physical health and well-being. We must take control of our tongue and mouth, whether it’s the words we speak or the food we consume.
Remember, our words shape our consciousness and influence our actions. By speaking positively and righteously, we can create a positive impact in our lives. Let us be mindful of our choices and strive to make godly and healthy decisions for our bodies.
Pray with me:
Dear Heavenly Father in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior,
I pray that you give us the great grace and power to discipline our mouth and tongue in that which we speak and consume. Let that which we say be life-giving, full of God’s truth, love and joy. Let’s our words reflect the nature of Christ Jesus in us. Also we ask by your great mercy for forgiveness for ungodly and destructive words we have spoken. May the blood of Jesus Christ redeem those words and reverse them to be words of life that will bring honor to your Name. Thank you for listening to our prayer in Jesus name. Amen!
God loves you and has given His life to save you. Be blessed
