I have often thought about why some people who achieve great things in life seem to fall from grace. It seems like one of the reasons is that the demands of their lives become too much for them to bear. When you are constantly in the spotlight and carrying the weight of your accomplishments on your shoulders, it can become overwhelming. I believe that is why God in His goodness tells us in His word to give Him all the glory in all that we do.
In my understanding, the word glory is the inherent nature an object, person or God which is revealed through their characteristics, conditions or actions. I want to explore glory as it relates to the marvelous works that are manifested through people’s lives.
“Glory belongs to God, whose power is at work in us. By this power He can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine.”
Ephesians 3:20 GW
It is important to recognize that all the wonderful accomplishments through the actions of humanity are as a result of God’s power working through us. While some may deny this truth and attribute their successes solely to their own efforts, those who believe in God understand that all of our abilities and accomplishments come from God. As believers, we acknowledge that God is the source of our existence and our actions, and we are grateful for the power that works within us to achieve great things.
As humans, we often forget that all the amazing things we accomplish are due to the power of God working through us. The Bible tells us that God’s power is at work in us, enabling us to do infinitely more than we could ever ask or imagine. Despite this truth, many people are tempted to take credit for their accomplishments and withhold glory from God.
Yes, we do play a big part in the works through our commitment, hard work, dedication and skills. But we often fail to recognize even in all of those things, it was God’s will which enabled us with to have the life, health, provision, gifts and talents to be able to do what we did and continue to do.
However, giving glory to God is not only the right thing to do, but it also protects us from becoming prideful and vain. We are not equipped to bear the weight of glory, and when we attempt to claim it for ourselves, we often become vessels for malice and destruction. Only God can receive glory and remain holy.
8 I am the Lord: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images. –
Isaiah 42:8 KJV
I have often found that in every command God has given is embedded with His love for us. God require us to give Him the glory for the works He does through us to protect us from becoming vain and prideful. He protects us by taking the weight of glory from our shoulders and filling our hearts with the joy of experiencing goodness of God through our lives.
Nebuchadnezzar and King Herod Failed to Give God the Glory
Scripture reveals how some persons lives were utterly destroyed because attempted to claim the glory for themselves which resulted in terrible outcomes.
King Nebuchadnezzar with so much pride in his heart claimed to be the one who built the great Babylon and was turned into a beast
All this happened to King Nebuchadnezzar. 29 Twelve months later, as the king was walking on the roof of the royal palace of Babylon, 30 he said, “Is not this the great Babylon I have built as the royal residence, by my mighty power and for the glory of my majesty?”
Even as the words were on his lips, a voice came from heaven, “This is what is decreed for you, King Nebuchadnezzar: Your royal authority has been taken from you. 32 You will be driven away from people and will live with the wild animals; you will eat grass like the ox. Seven times will pass by for you until you acknowledge that the Most High is sovereign over all kingdoms on earth and gives them to anyone he wishes.”
Daniel 4:28-32 NIV
King Herod’s horrific death in Acts 12 was as a result of allowing the people to attribute him as a god and not giving God the praise.
21 On the appointed day Herod, wearing his royal robes, sat on his throne and delivered a public address to the people. 22 They shouted, “This is the voice of a god, not of a man.” 23 Immediately, because Herod did not give praise to God, an angel of the Lord struck him down, and he was eaten by worms and died.
Acts 12:21-23 NIV
These outcomes may not be what we see today but the weight of bearing the glory is quite unbearable.
Beloved in Christ, I urge you to always give God the glory and praise for all that He does through you and in your life. This not only brings joy to God, but it also relieves you of the burden of carrying the weight of glory. Let God be the one on the pedestal, drawing people to Himself through your life. When Christ is lifted up, He will draw all people to Him. Remember, God dearly loves you for He gave His only beloved Son Jesus Christ to die to save you. Be blessed.
